Nakuru Town West businessman, David
Karuri has pledged to support girl child programmes and is calling for
the transfer of funds for sanitary towels from the ministry of education
to the newly formed affirmative action social development fund.
Addressing the press after distributing sanitary towels to students at Nakuru West Secondary School in Kapkures on Friday, Karuri said the fund meant to benefit the girl child will be better handled by the women representatives across the country.
He said that the ministry of education has several programmes to take care of and procurement of the sanitary towels sometimes takes too long creating gaps in between the year.
Karuri who has declared interest in the Nakuru Town West parliamentary seat said lack of sanitary towel has led to absenteeism among the school going girls and affects the overall performance in national examination.
“It’s estimated that 62 million girls globally are out of school for lack of sanitary towels. We will not wish Nakuru West to be part of this statistics”, she added.
The businessman urged other sponsors to support the programme because it is too costly for the government and most of the parents are vulnerable.
He also called on Nakuru county assembly to pass a bill to compel the county government to supply sanitary towels to all girl schools throughout the year.
“It’s also good to consolidate the funds into one kitty to avoid duplication and misuse of the same by rogue public officials”, she said.
